Products – Tiling

Oh, but tiling can be both fun and frustrating! While not an expert, I have tiled the entry, mudroom & bathroom floors, the wall space above two tub/shower inserts, a full walk-in shower, and a mosaic above the kitchen sink.  The tile size I’ve have used has ranged from subway 3″ x 6″ to Travertine 18″ x 18″ and tiny mosaic pieces.

My must-haves when working with tile:

  • Tile  🙂
  • Thinset or Mastic
  • Grout – Sanded or NonSanded
  • Cellouse sponges
  • Rubber Grout Float
  • Notched trowel
  • Grout Sealer
  • Tile cutter – manual cutter or tile wet saw
  • Buckets for water
  • Protective gear such as ear protection, gloves and goggles
  • Rags
  • Glass of wine – AFTER the project is complete  🙂
Tile for the Master Bath Shower

When tiling our Master Bath shower, I used a variety of sizes but the bulk of the tiles were subway 3″ x 6″ tiles. I bought those from Home Depot.  Daltile in Arctic White.  I found the large 6″ x 13″ tiles and purple accent tiles at Overstock Builders Supply in Spokane, WA and the 4 1/4″ x 10 1/2″ at Habitat.

The tools and products above are must haves when tiling.  If possible and your budget is not too tight, the premixed grout is awesome!  The notch size for your trowel will depend on the size of tile you will be using.  The larger the tile, the large notch size you’ll need.  I bought this pointed trowel to scoop out thinset from the bucket but you can use your notched trowel as well.

In the pictures below are additional products that you’ll need.  The buckets from Home Depot are nice for the water you’ll need for wiping down the tile after grouting; one will hold your sponges and the other will be fresh water for rinsing them out. You can tell be the condition of my sponges (these are only two of what I have) that I have recently used dark grout.

There are many brands of grout sealer.  The 511 Impregnator was recommended to me by my contractor and I have not strayed from using it.  It does a great job sealing and protecting your grout from the elements and dirt. This grout scoring tool comes in handy when your thinset is too thick and seeps up between the tiles. I use it to remove that extra thinset so the grout will have room to sit.

The thinset I’ve recently used is pictured.  It is grey; I used white for the Master Shower since my tile and grout were also white.  The tile saw I’m using in this picture belongs to my contractor, James, he was kind enough to offer it when we were working together on the Master Shower project. For previous tiling projects, I rented a wet saw from the local hardware store.

While I didn’t sit down on either of these benches to sip wine after tiling, it would have been an activity well deserved  🙂
