Expand your wardrobe inexpensively

Are you bored with your clothes? Do you feel your selection of clothing is sparse? Do you try to mix and match your clothing? I’m often complimented on my fashion style which always surprises me because I just mix and match what I have to shake it up. I get bored wearing the same thing over and over. Although I have many coworkers who do just that. When I was a teen, I worked in a few fast food joints where I had to wear a uniform and found that it sure made it easy to prepare for work since there was no variety. But since I don’t work where a uniform is required, I have the freedom (within dress code, of course) to wear pretty much what I want – Business Casual guidelines in mind.

I consider my fashion style to be eclectic. Being fashionable doesn’t need to cost a lot of $, most of my clothes are bought either at a thrift store or Ross. I’ll shop Target and Walmart for what they have on clearance. One of my favorite activities when I’m visiting with the kids is to go thrifting. My oldest son and I hit up Value Village in Montreal and my daughter and I frequent Goodwill when I’m in Cali. I always find a few (or more) unique items to bring home to incorporate into my collection.

Having learned to sew when I was young, I’ve made several articles of my wardrobe over the years. These days, though, my fashion sewing has taken the path to refashion, upcycle and refabing. I enjoy altering a piece of clothing to create something unique like the ones in these posts:

I began taking pics of my daily outfits a few months ago. I thought it would be fun to track just how many different outfits I could create using the clothes in my closet. My closet isn’t large like my sister’s awesome walk-in one, but it’s also not small like the 3′ x 4′ one I shared with a sister while we were growing up. I do weed it out and move older clothes to the Goodwill when the closet gets too full. It helps keep things fresh, too.

The pictures below are fall and winter pics so you’ll see that I love boots, leggings, sweaters, hats, knee highs. My go to colors are olive, mustard yellow, burgundy. I’ve ventured out to greys and have started wearing hats once in awhile.

I didn’t include the cost of my bra – Walmart $5 each, undies (can’t remember the prices on those) or regular socks in the prices. I do wear little tanks under some of these tops & sweaters – those I get at Walmart for $1.99 – $2.99 each
