Making the heart

The first step is to find your fabric. I used scraps for a few of these hearts and an old pair of jeans for another one. If you don’t have a fabric stash, these can be made from a piece of clothing you no longer wear.

The hearts I made are 7″ x 6″ but you can make them any size you want. If you are good with drawing, you can draw your own or download a heart from Clip Art.

Using your pattern, cut two pieces of fabric: one for the front and one for the back. You can use the same material or a coordinating one. If needed, iron the material to remove any wrinkles.

The next step is to pin the two pieces of fabric together. You have two choices, you can pin them right sides together, stitch them & turn them right side out or you can pin them wrong sides together and leave the edges raw.

Finished edge heart

Sew the front to the back using a sewing machine or by hand. You can also use fabric glue or hot glue to attach the front to the back. If you want a hanger for your heart, using a 5″-6″ piece of twine or ribbon, fold in half and place between the two pieces of fabric. With right sides together, stitch 1/4″ – 1/2″ from the edge, leaving a space to turn right side out. Trim seam & clip curves.

For stuffed heart, turn the heart right side out and insert fiberfill stuffing.

With needle & thread, stitch opening shut.

Raw edge heart

For raw edges, pin then sew (or glue) wrong sides together. If stuffing, leave an opening between the beginning & end of the stitching (or gluing). Finish edges by clipping them approximately 1/4″ apart or use pinking shears.

Once the edges have been clipped or pinked, stuff heart through the opening in the stitching. Sew opening closed with sewing machine, by hand or with glue. For a more ragged look, fluff the edges of the fabric that has been clipped.

Add flair

You can add an element of fun to your heart by sewing or gluing embellishments to it. Buttons, trim, fabric flowers, jewelry are all fun items to add to your finished project!

These little hearts are quick to make and don’t take a lot of fabric. You could make several and string them together for a Valentine garland. Make some and have on hand for last minute gifts.
