Let’s Make a Crown Royal Mask!

Earlier this year, I wrote a post on how to make a face mask and since we are still being asked to wear one, I thought I’d add another option. At the time of my original post, we were asked to wear masks to protect others ‘just in case’ we had the virus. Since then, we have heard that masks also provide at least some protection for us as well.

I have become somewhat accustomed to wearing one while running errands. In the Summer, there were days when wearing a mask was less comfortable due to the heat. However, now that it’s colder, I find that wearing a mask protects my face against the cold air. That’s a nice perk. My original face mask post, can be found here.

The masks in that post are made in the typical, hospital-like, design. This post has a much more exciting design!

Crown Royal Mask

The mask I’m making this time is made from a Crown Royal bag. The nice thing about using a Crown Royal bag is that it’s relatively free (especisially if someone gives them to you) and the fabric is nice and dense.

I don’t drink Crown Royal, but a friend gave me a dozen bags a few years ago, just in case I thought of a craft project where they could be used. Well, I finally found a project where I can use them! These masks are quick to make and require no additional materials (unless you replace the twine with elastic). I have made masks both ways: with the exiting twine and with elastic for the earpieces.

Supplies Needed
  • Crown Royal bag
  • Elastic – optional if using existing twine
  • Pins
  • Thread
  • Scissors or rotary cutter & cutting ruler
  • Sewing machine

There are two sizes of Crown Royal bags; at least, the ones I was given came in two sizes. I have found that the large bag was just the right size for hubby’s mask and the mask from the small bag fit me nicely.

How to sew a Crown Royal face mask

You’ll be cutting the bag into 3 sections. You’ll use the top and middle of the bag. You will not need the bottom of the bag.

Preparing casing using twine
Preparing casing using elastic
Attaching casing to mask
Instructions
  • To prepare the material
    • Lay the bag on a flat surface
    • Cut off the top of the bag about 1 1/2″ from the casing that holds the twine. This will become the sides of the mask and earpieces.
    • Cut below the Crown Royal writing where the bag starts to curve. This section will be the body of the mask
  • To make the body of the mask
    • Turn the center piece (body of the mask) inside out
    • Stitch shut using 1/4″ seam
      • At the top edge, leave an opening to turn the piece right side out. The opening should be a little over an inch
      • At the bottom edge, stitch from side to side
    • Trim corner pieces
    • Turn piece right side out
    • Press with iron using a pressing cloth
    • Slip a twist tie into the opening at the top of the mask
    • Secure the twist tie in place by stitching close to the top edge and around the twist tie. This will also close the opening
  • To make the earpieces
  • If using elastic for earpieces:
    • Line up grommets & cut casing into 2 pieces
    • Remove twine
    • Cut 2 pieces of 1/4″ elastic (6″ for small mask/7 1/2″ for large mask)
    • Using a safety pin, thread elastic through the casing from right to left, securing the right end of elastic with a sewing pin
    • Remove the safety pin and with a small crochet hook, pull the left end of the elastic through the right grommet
    • Feed the left end of the elastic through the left grommet
    • Insert your crochet hook through the left side of the casing & grab the left end of the elastic. Pull elastic through the casing & secure with a sewing pin
    • Stitch each side of the elastic to hold in place
    • Repeat with 2nd casing
    • To clean finish the edges of the casing, for each piece, turn over the ends of the casing twice and stitch in place. You can use a sewing machine or hand-stitch them.
    • With right sides together, pin one casing to each side of the mask about 1/4″ from the edge. You may need to add a few tucks or gathers to get them to fit.
    • Stitch casing in place
    • Press casing toward the outside of the mask
    • Stitch casing to mask from the back side of the mask
  • If using existing twine for earpieces:
    • Pull the twine through the grommets to ensure each side has the same amount of twine
    • Stitch the twine in place
    • Cut casing into two pieces
    • To clean finish the edges of the casing, for each piece, turn over the ends of the casing twice and stitch in place. You can use a sewing machine or hand-stitch them.
    • With right sides together, pin one casing to each side of the mask about 1/4″ from the edge. You may need to add a few tucks or gathers to get them to fit.
    • Stitch casing in place
    • Press casing toward the outside of the mask
    • Stitch casing to mask from the back side of the mask
