Let’s Create a Christmas Wreath!

If you’ve shopped for Christmas wreaths, you know they can be spendy. We have an outside one that has lights on it that we bought several years ago. A couple of years ago, some of the lights stopped working so hubby ordered a new one. Little did he know, he actually ordered one with fresh boughs so it was only good for the one year. After the boughs were dry, I took the wreath apart and saved the battery-powered lights. I figured I could buy the other materials and make a new wreath using the lights.

A bit of background

After I bought the supplies, I mentioned it to hubby who asked about the original wreath we had with the non-working lights. He thought we still had it. I thought I had tossed it. I should have known better, because I rarely toss anything that might have a future use on a craft or project.

Sure enough, the original wreath was in the shed with the rest of the Christmas decorations!! Well, now, I might as well just remove the old lights and add the lights that I had saved from the fresh wreath. That was a simple job. I used wire cutters to clip the bad lights off of the original wreath and then wove the lights from the fresh wreath into the boughs. I didn’t take any pics of that project as it was so quick to do.

Building a new wreath

Since I had just purchased supplies for a wreath but no need to replace the outside one. What should I do?! Make one for the inside of the front door! The supplies I bought were from the $1 Store and cost a total of $7. What did I get for $7? A 14″ wire frame, 2 packages of wired garland – 15′ each, 2 large red bells that had a bit of greenery & small pinecones on them, Florist wire, a package of small red bells. I videoed this project for YouTube and will add the video below. I forgot to take progress pics so the ones here are from the video….my apologies for any fuzziness.

Wreath supplies

  • 14″ wire wreath frame
  • 2 pkgs 15′ wired garland
  • 1 garland bough
  • 2 large bells
  • 3 pinecones
  • Large red bow or red ribbon to make a bow
  • 1 pkg small red bells
  • Florist wire
  • Wire cutters
  • Hot glue gun & glue sticks

Wrapping the frame

Although I have not created a wreath before, this one was soooooo easy to do! To attach the garland to the frame, I cut it into smaller pieces, approximately 18″ each. Securing them to the frame was easy, I just bent the end of the garland over the outside ring of the frame then wrapped it from the front of the frame, through the center, and around the back. I figured it would be nice to have the back wrapped in case I wanted to use it in a window. As I was wrapping the garland around the frame, I scrunched each section close to the previous to make it look like a continuous piece of garland.

Adding small bough pieces

It took both packages of the 15′ garland to cover the frame nice and thick. I could have just stopped there but I had some wired garland from the tiny Christmas tree project so I decided to use it to add some dimension to the wreath. That garland was in a bough form so I cut off the little pieces and then stuffed them into the garland that was already on the frame, bending the ends around that garland to hold them in place.

Adding the ornaments & bow

With the frame covered in garland, it was time to decorate the wreath. I had a red bow that I had previously purchased at the $1 Store. It was sold in a set of 2. I used the other bow on another project. The bow came with its own wire so it was easy to attach to the top of the wreath by threading the wire through the garland and twisting the ends together. I used the Florist wire to attach 2 large bells & 3 pinecones to the frame.

Gluing on small bells

After the other decorations were on the wreath, I used the hot glue gun and attached some little red bells. If you are using these small bells, be extra careful applying the hot glue!

Finished Wreath

I am so pleased and surprised at how quickly this wreath came together & it’s stink’n adorable! This wreath will hang on the inside of the front door this year. I did take some pictures of it on the red doors downstairs and, boy is it pretty! The finished size is 16″

How it looks hanging

Since I had the pinecones & bow on hand, I didn’t calculate them into the $7 price of creating this wreath but if you were to buy them at the $1 Store or a thrift shop, the price would still be below $10! Such a great price for a unique wreath that you can create! If you have Christmas decorations and ribbon on hand, the price of this project would be even less! Happy crafting!

Instructions

  • Cut garland into 18″ to 24″ pieces
  • Wrap each piece around the frame from front to back, bending over the beginning and end of the garland to the frame.
  • Push together the sections to remove any sparse places
  • Add small clippings of garland around the wreath for texture (optional)
  • Add Christmas ornaments for decoration using thin wire or a hot glue gun
  • Decorate with a bow
