Let’s Build a Snowman!

Here is a quick DIY for you to make for Christmas décor or gifts. If you are a crafter, this craft can be made with materials you have on hand! If you are not a crafter or don’t have leftover supplies from other projects, no worries, the supplies are inexpensive and some of them are available at thrift stores or the Dollar Store.

Wooden Snowman

This snowman is made from scrap wood.  He is easy to make and goes together quickly – you just need time for the paint & glue to dry.  I used 2 x 4 wood so the height, including the hat is about 9”. You could also use 4 x 4 wood.

Supplies

  • 1′ – 2″ x 4″ board
  • 4″ – 1″ x 4″ board
  • 2″ of a round dowel
  • Saw – I used my miter saw
  • Sandpaper
  • Glue gun
  • Wood glue
  • White & black craft or interior paint
  • Paintbrush
  • Small wooden pieces for nose and eyes – (or draw them on yourself)
  • Orange Sharpie & Black Sharpie
  • 12″ ribbon or one inch wide material for scarf
  • 2 buttons
  • Embellishments for hat – garland, bells, leaves, bows
Step 1 – Cut & Sand

Before I cut the wood for my snowman, I sanded it using a sanding block. If you prefer, you can sand each piece after you cut it to size. I cut the pieces of wood for the snowman with my miter saw. For the body, I used a piece of 2 x 4 board. The sizes for the three pieces are: 5″, 4″, 3″. For the hat brim, I used a 1 x 4 & cut it into a 4″ piece. The top of the hat is a 2″ dowel cut to a length of 2″.

Step 2 – Paint & Glue

The next step is to paint each piece. I applied 2 coats of paint to all pieces. I used Kilz primer for the body because I didn’t have regular white paint. Normally, I would have used a white latex paint. For the hat, I used a water-based black paint. You can also use craft paint for this project. After allowing the paint to dry, I glued the pieces together starting with the 5″ square and working my way to the brim of the hat.

Step 3 – Make the face

Once the snowman has been painted and assembled, it’s time to make it look like a snowman. I used small wood shapes for the eyes & nose and colored them with markers. If you don’t have wood shapes, you can use buttons or draw the eyes and nose on the 3″ block using markers or craft paint. When the wood pieces were dry, I glued them onto the top white piece using wood glue.

Step 4 – Decorate

Time for the finishing touches! Using a glue gun, I glued the top of the hat onto the brim then added a sprig of greenery & some small pinecones. The is an area you can customize by choosing small Christmas ornaments or bows, etc. For the body of the snowman, I attached heavy string through some buttons and glued them onto the lower two blocks. To finish the look, I tied a piece of ribbon around the neck to form a scarf and secured it with a couple of dabs of hot glue.
